Your Epoch Introduction to Petite Sirah

by Christine Ovasapyan, Tasting Room Educator

If you’ve been around the block with us a few times, then you know all about our Ingenuity label and what makes it mouth-watering good.  With its first vintage born in 2008, this wine is very special considering it is the only one under our belt that features Petite Sirah.  Slowly, over the years, the percentage of Petite Sirah has been increasing to finally get us to a Petite Sirah dominant blend.  Although the 2017 Ingenuity is unlike any other vintage with 56% Petite Sirah, I’m actually here to break down our 2015 Ingenuity for you and fill you in on why you shouldn’t pass up on breaking open this bad boy now.

But before we do that, let’s touch base on Petite Sirah.  If you’re familiar with Epoch and what we do here, then you know that we focus on the Rhône varieties.  Outside of those varieties, we also grow some Zinfandel,  Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah.  The most common assumption about Petite Sirah is that it’s the more “petite” version of Syrah.  It’s actually a cross between Syrah and Peloursin and is a very rare grape.  It grows in dense clusters on the vine and is small in size yet big in flavor.  It’s bold and produces an inky color with high tannins and high acidity thanks to its skin-to-juice ratio.

The Ingenuity is one of those wines you want to take your time with and really savor.  It’s a red that needs a minute (or more Ü) to open up, and once you lead with patience, this wine will not let you down.  Our 2015 Ingenuity features a delicious blend of 51% Syrah, 28% Mourvèdre, 14% Petite Sirah, and 7% Grenache.  Featuring fruit from Paderewski Vineyard and Catapult Vineyard, this wine serves as a delectable powerhouse, filled with everything you seek in a bigger, bolder red.  I can go on and on about the Ingenuity.  Being that it is one of my absolute favorites within our lineup, I only have great things to say about this wine.  From the dark fruit, captivating tannins, and delicate, yet firm backbone, this wine will leave you begging for more.  Let’s dive in to the brain of the one and only, Jordan Fiorentini.  Here’s what she has to say about the 2015 Ingenuity…

The 2015 Ingenuity presents all its characteristic black and blue fruits, spice and licorice, however, it does so in a more reserved fashion than most vintages.  This California Rhône blend continues to reveal fresh aromatics after being open for 24-plus-hours, and the tannins move from picante to velvety as oxygen soften their structure.  Enjoy the bramble berry, roasted herbs, smoke meats, graphite, wet rock and sweet tobacco notes that ride high on the palate, continuously evolving.
