This bottling reveals the magic of York Mountain, where the power of Paso Robles meets the undeniable influence of a cooler climate. Aromas of blackberry, elderflower and violet lead from the nose into a tense palate of elderberry jam, charred gam and cracked peppercorns. These flavors crave cellar time but are delicious now. Drink now-2042. — Matt Kettmann

We are absolutely thrilled to share that our 2021 York Mountain Syrah was selected as #33 on Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2025.  We are so excited about this awesome achievement and so grateful for Wine Enthusiast’s recognition of this wine.  Made up of 96% Syrah, 2% Roussanne, 2% Viognier (whites were co-fermented with Syrah) all from our York Mountain Vineyard, we are so proud of this 97-point wine!

Our 2021 York Mountain Syrah is made entirely from grapes off our York Mountain Vineyard.  This vineyard site is located just seven miles from the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of 1,500 feet and falls in the small 640 acre York Mountain AVA, which is outside of the very large Paso Robles AVA.  The soils and climate here are very different than our other two vineyards; at York, you’ll find sand and sandstone soils (a stark contrast to the limestone you’d find over at Paderewski Vineyard or the shale at Catapult Vineyard) along with a very moderate climate due to the even closer proximity to the Pacific Ocean.  Because of its elevation and distance from the ocean, York Mountain receives more than twice the amount of rainfall as our other vineyards and has characteristic foggy mornings throughout the year with cool breezes all day long.

Bottle of 2021 Epoch Syrah

2021 York Mountain Syrah | 97 points

The 2021 York Mountain Syrah stands out uniquely in its ability to push and pull serious sensation across the nose and palate all the while remaining ethereal and elegant.  Red and black cherry aromas coincide with an herb-laced bouquet of sage, bay leaf and underbrush, fresh cracked pepper, and white roses. An unmistakable meaty/iron-laced undertone sends your mind connecting the dots between the Syrahs of the world, and it finishes with a touch of cocoa and vanilla.  This is York Mountain Syrah in its truest form from a dreamy vintage.  Age it for 10+ years but make sure you try a few bottles along the way.

Scores and recognition like this are humbling, encouraging, and so fun to share with others!  Epoch is a special place with really special wines, and we are grateful that others can see and taste this too.
